Aryabhata

Why was the satellite Aryabhata a landmark in Indian space research ?

On April 19,  1975,   India entered the space age. On this historic day, India launched his first-ever satellite. It was the Aryabhata after the great 5th Century astronomer and mathematician.

Aryabhata was actually launched from within the Soviet Union by a Russian made rocket, under an agreement signed by the two countries. It was made by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The purpose of Aryabhata was to conduct experiments in X-ray astronomy and solar physics.
