Train in India

Why was 1853 a historic year for India?

April 16, 1853, was a historical day in India. It was on this day that the first passenger train service was introduced between Bori Bunder Bombay and Thane.

The train with 14 railway carriages, caring around 400 guests, left Bori Bunder at 3:30 p.m. that day. It was drawn by three engines, and covered a total distance of 33 kilometres in 57 minutes. Railways were developed in India first by British East India company, and later, by the British government mainly to transport troops for their war, and secondly, to transport cotton for export to mills in UK.

Since then, the Indian railway has grown to become the largest rail network in Asia today. It is also the world's second-largest network operated under single management.

Indian railway has 115,000 km of track length, and runs 12,617 trains carrying over 23 million passengers daily, connecting more than 7,112 stations. It is indeed amazing to think it all begin as single train service.
