Opening Of Suez Canal

Why was the opening of Suez Canal a historic event?

The Suez Canal is a manmade canal in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, through the Isthmus of Suez.

Earlier, ships sailing between Europe and South had to make a long and dangerous voyager all the way around the tip of Africa. The opening of the Suez  Canal in 1869, changed all that.

Ships could now go directly between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea through the canal. This 193 km long waterway reduced the sea voyage distance between Europe and South Asia by 7000km.

The Suez is the longest canal in the world without locks- and the safest too. To sum up, the Suez Canal is the shortest sea link between the east and the west, due to its unique geographic location. Its opening gave a tremendous boost to the maritime industry and world trade.
